The Complete Checklist for Laser Cutter Installation and Site Prep

Introduction

The day is finally coming. You’ve signed the contract, the wire transfer has cleared, and your shiny new Arcuscnc Fiber Laser is on a ship crossing the ocean.

Excitement is high. But let’s be honest: Anxiety is higher.

  • “Will it fit through the door?”

  • “Do we have enough power?”

  • “Did I buy the right air compressor?”

We have seen it happen too many times: The truck pulls up with a 4-ton machine, and the customer realizes their forklift can only lift 2 tons. Or the electrician arrives and realizes the voltage is 208V, but the machine needs 480V.

These delays cost money. They kill momentum.

A successful laser cutter installation doesn’t start when the technician arrives; it starts weeks before the machine is even delivered. It starts with Site Preparation.

In this comprehensive guide, we are going to walk you through the Arcuscnc Pre-Installation Protocol. This is the exact checklist we use to ensure that when your machine hits the floor, it’s plugged in, leveled, and cutting parts on Day 1.

Space & Foundation (Don’t Box Yourself In)

The first step of any laser cutter installation is defining the physical footprint.

1. The “Real” Footprint

Don’t just look at the machine dimensions (e.g., 5m x 3m). You need to account for:

  • Maintenance Access: You need at least 1 meter (3 feet) of clearance on all sides of the machine. Technicians need to open the rear electrical cabinet and side panels for service.

  • Material Handling: How are you loading the sheet? If you use a forklift, you need a turning radius. If you use a jib crane, check the ceiling height.

2. The Foundation (Concrete Quality)

A high-power fiber laser accelerates at 1.5G. If your floor is weak, the machine will shake, and your cuts will be wavy.

  • Requirement: Standard industrial reinforced concrete floor.

  • Thickness: At least 150mm (6 inches) thick.

  • Level: The floor should be relatively flat (within 10mm over the machine length). Our leveling feet can adjust for small variances, but they can’t fix a hill.

  • Isolation: If you have a heavy stamping press or punch press nearby, do not place the laser right next to it. The ground vibration from the stamping press will ruin the laser’s precision.

Pro Tip: Ask Arcuscnc for the “Foundation Layout Drawing” (DWG/PDF) immediately after purchase. Use tape to mark the floor physically. It makes the visualization real.

Electrical Power (The Lifeblood)

This is the #1 cause of failed laser cutter installation attempts. Industrial power is not standardized globally, so you must communicate with your electrician.

1. Voltage Matching

Fiber lasers are sensitive electronics.

  • China/Europe Standard: 380V / 50Hz / 3-Phase.

  • USA/Canada Standard: 208V, 240V, or 480V / 60Hz / 3-Phase.

The Solution: If your shop voltage is 208V or 240V, you MUST install a step-up transformer to reach the machine’s required voltage (usually 380V or 480V). Arcuscnc can include this transformer in your package if we know ahead of time.

2. The Voltage Stabilizer (Regulator)

Does your factory power fluctuate? Do lights flicker when the welder turns on? Fiber laser sources (IPG/Raycus) hate voltage spikes. A spike can burn out a $15,000 laser module.

  • Recommendation: We highly recommend installing a Servo Voltage Stabilizer (AVR). It ensures the machine gets a clean, constant voltage (e.g., ±3%).

3. Dedicated Breaker & Amperage

Do not share the circuit with your air compressor or welder. The laser needs a dedicated breaker.

  • 3kW Machine: Typically needs ~40-50 Amps @ 480V.

  • 12kW Machine: Can need 100+ Amps.

  • Check the “Electrical Schematic” sent by our team for the exact breaker size.

Gas Supply (The Consumable)

Your laser needs gas to cut. You need to have the plumbing ready before the laser cutter installation technician arrives.

1. Oxygen (O2)

  • Purity: Industrial Grade (99.5%+).

  • Source: Standard cylinders (bottles) or a Liquid Oxygen Dewar.

  • Regulator: You need a regulator capable of delivering 10 Bar (145 PSI) pressure. Standard welding regulators are often too weak.

2. Nitrogen (N2)

  • Purity: High Purity (99.99%+). If the Nitrogen is dirty, your stainless steel edges will turn yellow/black.

  • Source: Liquid Nitrogen Dewar (recommended) or Bulk Tank. Standard gas cylinders run out in 20 minutes—don’t use them for production.

  • Regulator: High pressure! You need 20-25 Bar (300-360 PSI) output.

3. The “Air Cutting” Setup (Compressed Air)

If you plan to use Air Cutting (and you should), you need a dedicated system.

  • Compressor: Screw type (not piston). Minimum 16 Bar (230 PSI).

  • Dryer: Refrigerated dryer is mandatory.

  • Filters: Multi-stage filtration (to 0.01 micron). Oil and Water are the enemies. If oil gets onto the laser lens, the lens will explode instantly.

Pro Tip: Check your fitting threads. Are you in the USA (NPT threads) or Europe/Asia (BSP/G threads)? We provide adapters, but your local plumber needs to know.

Environment Control (Heat & Dust)

A fiber laser is not a rugged tractor; it is a precision optical instrument.

1. Temperature

The Laser Source and Chiller have a “sweet spot.”

  • Summer: If your shop exceeds 35°C (95°F), the chiller may struggle to cool the laser, causing “High Temp Alarms” and shutdowns. You might need an AC unit for the laser room.

  • Winter: If your shop drops below 0°C (32°F), the water in the chiller will freeze and crack the laser tubes. This is a $20,000 disaster.

    • Solution: In winter, you must use Antifreeze (Propylene Glycol) in the chiller or keep the machine in a heated room.

2. Dust & Humidity

High humidity creates condensation on the optical lenses. High dust (from grinding/welding nearby) clogs the electrical cabinet fans.

  • Placement: Keep the laser away from sandblasting or grinding areas.

Delivery Day Logistics (The Heavy Lifting)

The truck is here. The driver is impatient. Don’t let this be the moment you fail.

1. The Forklift Capacity

A standard 3015 enclosed machine weighs about 3,500kg to 5,000kg (8,000 – 11,000 lbs). A standard warehouse forklift is usually rated for 5,000 lbs. It will tip over.

  • Requirement: Rent a heavy-duty forklift (minimum 5-ton capacity) for the delivery day.

2. Fork Length (The “Long Forks”)

The machine is 2.3 meters wide. Standard forklift tines are 1.2 meters. If you try to lift it, you will only grab half the machine, and it will crush the sheet metal skirting.

  • Requirement: You need 6-foot or 8-foot fork extensions.

3. The Path

Walk the path from the loading dock to the final spot.

  • Are the doors wide enough? (Remove door frames if needed).

  • Are there low-hanging pipes or lights?

  • Is the concrete on the ramp strong enough?

IT and Connectivity

Modern laser cutter installation involves software.

1. The Computer

Arcuscnc machines come with the PC built-in (industrial computer). However, you need to prepare:

  • Internet Connection: Run an Ethernet cable (LAN) or have strong Wi-Fi at the machine.

  • Why? Our technicians use TeamViewer for remote diagnostics. If the machine is offline, we can’t help you remotely.

2. Software Design PC

Don’t design parts on the machine console. It slows down production. Have a separate PC in your office with CypCut (we provide a free office version) or AutoCAD/SolidWorks to prepare the DXF files.

The “Arcuscnc Pre-Install” PDF

Feeling overwhelmed? Don’t be. When you order from Arcuscnc, you don’t just get an invoice. You get a dedicated “Pre-Installation Packet”.

This document includes:

  1. Exact Foundation Drawings (Cad file).

  2. Electrical Schematics.

  3. Gas Connection Diagrams.

  4. Consumable List (Oil, Water, Anti-freeze specs).

We will verify your site photos via WhatsApp/Email before we ship the machine. We don’t let you fail.

FAQ: Installation Edition

Q1: How long does the actual installation take?

A: If the site is prepared (power/gas ready), a standard machine takes 2-3 days.

  • Day 1: Unpacking, positioning, leveling.

  • Day 2: Wiring, alignment, software setup.

  • Day 3: Training your operators.

Q2: Do I need to buy the hydraulic oil for the machine?

A: No, fiber lasers generally don’t use hydraulic oil (unless you have a heavy hydraulic lifter). You do need to buy distilled water for the chiller (about 20-30 gallons) and lubrication oil (ISO VG32 or 68) for the guide rails.

Q3: Can I install the machine myself to save money?

A: We provide detailed video tutorials, and about 40% of our experienced customers do self-installation. However, for high-power machines (6kW+), we strongly recommend hiring our local certified partners or using our guided remote installation service to ensure the warranty remains valid.

Q4: What kind of fire extinguisher should I have nearby?

A: You should have a CO2 Fire Extinguisher nearby. Do not use a powder extinguisher if possible, as the powder will destroy the machine’s optics and electronics if sprayed.

Q5: My floor isn’t perfectly level. Is that a problem?

A: The machine has heavy-duty leveling feet that can adjust up to ~30mm. As long as the slope isn’t extreme, we can level the machine perfectly using a precision machinist’s level during setup.
