5 Aerospace Manufacturing Challenges Solved by Laser Technology
1. Machining titanium and Inconel without tool wear variability
Arcus CNC solution: Fiber laser cutting profiles difficult aerospace alloys without mechanical tool contact, eliminating tool wear as a dimensional variability source and improving speed versus EDM in many thin-to-medium gauge applications.
2. Permanent part marking after coating and treatment
Arcus CNC solution: Fiber laser annealing, ablation and deep marking processes create UID and data matrix codes that support post-treatment traceability workflows.
3. Zero-erosion cleaning for life-limited parts
Arcus CNC solution: Pulsed laser cleaning removes TBC, oxides and residue while preserving base material dimensions, supporting repeated repair cycles and NDT inspection preparation.
4. CFRP trimming without mechanical tool wear
Arcus CNC solution: CO2 laser processing and 5-axis PCD routing options support composite trimming, edge preparation and complex panel geometry.
5. Multi-decade traceability for defense components
Arcus CNC solution: Fiber laser deep engraving and UID marking produce durable identifiers for parts exposed to repainting, abrasion, decontamination and field maintenance.
FAQ
Fiber laser cutting of titanium with argon or nitrogen assist gas dramatically reduces alpha-case formation compared with plasma or oxyfuel cutting. For zero-alpha-case requirements, argon assist, high pressure and validated parameters should be used for the specific alloy and thickness.
Arcus CNC fiber laser marking systems can produce AMS 2816-compatible marks when configured for the required material, mark depth, contrast and location. Annealing is preferred when zero material removal is required; ablation or deep engraving may be specified for post-treatment resistance.
Chemical stripping removes coatings with liquid chemistry and requires containment and disposal. Pulsed laser cleaning removes coatings by ablation, produces no liquid waste stream, and is especially valuable for precision parts where chemical attack or substrate erosion is unacceptable.
Arcus CNC manufactures under ISO 9001:2015 and provides CE documentation, machine inspection records, operation manuals and related quality documents. Arcus CNC is not itself AS9100 registered; machines are supplied to customer facilities that may operate under AS9100 quality systems.
Fiber laser cutting is faster on thin-to-medium gauge parts and offers narrower kerf and lower operating cost. Waterjet is cold cutting with zero HAZ and can be preferred for thick plate or HAZ-critical applications. The right choice depends on thickness, tolerance, volume and heat sensitivity.
NADCAP accreditation applies to the facility and process, not the machine alone. Arcus CNC supports customers preparing for special-process audits with process documentation, calibration data, repeatability information and application engineering support.
