Cutting Process Selection for Heavy Equipment Plate

The most economical production line often combines fiber laser cutting for precision medium-thick plate and CNC plasma cutting for very thick structural steel.

Process Thickness Range Cut Quality Operating Cost Best Application in Heavy Equipment
Fiber Laser 6kW 3–25mm Excellent, Ra 3.2–6.5, ±0.1mm Medium Frame rails, brackets, HSLA plate, precision components
Fiber Laser 12kW 5–50mm Excellent, Ra 3.2–9.0, ±0.1mm Medium-high Heavy frame sections, thick HSLA / AR plate to 20mm
CNC Plasma HD 5–50mm Good, Ra 6.5–12.5, ±0.5mm Low Counterweights, heavy structural frames, bulk plate processing
CNC Plasma Standard 10–200mm Fair, Ra 12.5–25, ±1.5mm Very low Very thick structural and low-tolerance components
Oxyfuel Flame 20–500mm Adequate, ±2–3mm Very low Extreme thickness structural steel and on-site cutting
MANUFACTURING CHALLENGES

5 Heavy Equipment Manufacturing Challenges — and How Arcus CNC Addresses Them

1. Thick-plate cutting productivity must match welding and assembly speed

Arcus CNC solution: Dual-pallet exchange tables, large-format cutting beds and intelligent nesting reduce loading downtime and keep downstream welding stations supplied with parts.

2. Springback variation in HSLA and AR steel bending

Arcus CNC solution: CNC press brakes with Delem DA-69T, material-specific springback libraries, active crowning and optional angle measurement help control bend accuracy.

3. Plate grade and surface condition variation

Arcus CNC solution: Pre-configured material libraries store cutting parameters for mild steel, S355, S450, S700, AR steel and common thicknesses.

4. Field-durable part identification over 10–20 years

Arcus CNC solution: Deep fiber laser engraving creates identifiers physically embedded in the steel surface, helping component traceability survive paint, washing and outdoor service.

5. Replacing sandblasting for large-frame corrosion removal

Arcus CNC solution: 2kW–3kW CW laser cleaning removes rust and paint from excavator chassis, agricultural frames and rebuild equipment without abrasive media waste.

FAQ

Agriculture & Heavy Equipment Manufacturing FAQ

Use fiber laser cutting for 3–25mm plate when accuracy, edge quality and reduced grinding matter. Use CNC plasma cutting for 30mm+ thick structural steel when operating cost and maximum cutting capacity matter more than laser-level edge quality. Many heavy fabrication plants use both.

Yes. Fiber laser cutting is routinely used on abrasion-resistant steel. Oxygen assist gas, sufficient power and controlled heat input are important. AR steel above about 20mm may require pre-heat depending on grade and thickness to reduce cracking risk.

On moderate surface rust, a 2kW CW laser cleaner can typically clean around 30–50 m²/hour. Heavy mill scale or thick paint over rust is slower, while light oxidation and weld discoloration can clean faster.

Fiber laser deep engraving creates a physical mark in the steel surface. Paint can partially fill the engraved cells while leaving enough residual contrast or relief for scanning, helping the identifier survive washing, weather, corrosion and long-term outdoor use.

Yes, with sufficient tonnage, active crowning, material-specific springback compensation and, for demanding Hardox or AR500 applications, optional in-process angle measurement.

Laser cleaning requires suitable fume extraction, laser safety glasses for the laser wavelength and controlled work procedures. For large-area CW cleaning, a higher-capacity HEPA-filtered extractor is recommended to manage sustained fume volume.
