Laser Cleaning & Surface
Laser cleaning represents a paradigm shift. It is a non-contact, non-abrasive, and eco-friendly technology that uses high-energy light to vaporise contaminants instantly.
At Arcus CNC, we have pioneered the transition from traditional surface preparation to laser ablation. Our industrial-grade laser cleaning machines are not toys; they are engineered tools designed to remove heavy rust, thick paint coatings, and stubborn oil grease without damaging the underlying base material. Whether you need a portable handheld laser rust remover for on-site maintenance or an automated gantry system for a production line, Arcus CNC delivers the power and precision to restore surfaces to their original condition.

The Environmental Shift
Zero Waste
Unlike sandblasting, which generates tons of contaminated grit, laser cleaning produces only a small amount of dust (vaporised coating) that is easily captured by a fume extractor.

Core Cleaning Applications: From Rust to Rubber
1. Laser Rust Removal (De-rusting)
Rust (Iron Oxide) is the most common enemy of steel structures.
Heavy Scale: For thick layers of rust on bridges, ship hulls, or pipelines, our high power CW laser cleaners (1500W – 3000W) can strip down to bare metal (
SA 2.5standard) at speeds up to 15-20 m²/hour.Flash Rust: For delicate machined parts or storage tanks with light surface oxidation, a lower power pulsed laser (100W – 200W) gently removes the oxide layer without altering the surface roughness or dimensions. This is critical for maintaining tolerances on engine components.
2. Laser Paint Stripping (De-coating)
Removing paint usually involves toxic chemical strippers or aggressive sandblasting that damages the substrate.
Selective Stripping: One of the unique capabilities of laser paint removal is selectivity. By tuning the laser, we can strip the topcoat (colour) while leaving the primer intact. This is invaluable in aerospace maintenance where the composite substrate must be protected.
Complete Removal: For full refurbishment, the laser vaporises all layers of paint, epoxy, and powder coating, leaving a clean, textured surface ready for repainting.
3. Oil & Grease Removal (De-greasing)
Preparing metal for bonding or welding requires a chemically clean surface.
Deep Cleaning: Conventional solvents often leave a thin residue. Laser oil cleaning vaporises oil, grease, and fingerprints at the molecular level.
Weld Prep: Cleaning the joint line before welding (especially on Aluminium) eliminates hydrogen porosity in the weld bead. This is a standard process in automotive battery manufacturing.
4. Weld Seam Cleaning (Pre & Post)
Welding generates oxides and discolouration (heat tint) that must be removed for corrosion resistance and aesthetics.
Post-Weld Cleaning: A handheld laser cleaner can quickly remove the blue/brown heat tint from stainless steel welds, restoring the passivation layer and the shiny metallic look without the need for pickling paste (hydrofluoric acid).
Pre-Weld: Removing shop primer, rust, or oil from the weld zone ensures a strong, defect-free joint.
Industry-Specific Solutions
Marine & Offshore
Saltwater corrosion is relentless. Ballast Tank Cleaning: Traditional blasting in confined spaces creates immense dust and cleanup costs. Laser rust removal produces minimal waste, making it safer for operators in enclosed environments. Propeller Polishing: Cleaning bronze propellers to remove marine growth (bio-fouling) without damaging the hydrodynamic profile.
Automotive & Tyre Manufacturing
Mould Cleaning: Tyre moulds and injection moulds accumulate rubber, plastic, and release agents over time. Sandblasting wears down the intricate tread patterns. Laser mold cleaning (using Pulsed lasers) removes the residue without touching the metal mould, extending its lifespan significantly. E-Mobility: Cleaning battery trays and busbars to ensure perfect electrical conductivity before bonding.
Aerospace & Aviation
Composite Cleaning: Removing paint from carbon fibre fuselage skins without damaging the resin matrix. This requires the precision of a MOPA pulsed laser. Turbine Blades: Removing thermal barrier coatings (TBC) from jet engine components during overhaul.
Historical Restoration
Gentle Cleaning: Restoring stone statues, bronze monuments, and historical building facades. The laser can be tuned to remove soot, pollution, and graffiti without cracking the aged stone (laser stone cleaning).

Handheld vs. Automated: The Right Tool for the Job
Portable Backpack Cleaners:Our 100w pulsed laser cleaning machine is lightweight and battery-operated for maximum mobility.
Trolley-Mounted Units
Robotic Integration:
we integrate our laser sources with 6-axis robots to create fully automated cleaning cells.
Safety First: Fume Extraction & Training
Laser cleaning generates significant amounts of vaporised material (dust, fumes) which can be hazardous if inhaled.
Integrated Fume Extraction:
Laser Safety Certification:
We provide comprehensive training on laser safety, including the proper use of laser safety glasses (OD6+) and the establishment of controlled work zones.
Cost Efficiency: Lower Total Cost of Ownership
While the initial investment in a laser cleaning machine is higher than a sandblaster, the operating costs are dramatically lower.
No Consumables: There is no grit, sand, or chemical solvent to buy and dispose of. The only consumable is electricity.
Low Maintenance: Fiber laser sources have a lifespan of up to 100,000 hours with minimal maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions
A: No, if the parameters are set correctly. The process relies on the fact that rust/paint absorbs the laser energy much faster than the base metal. The contaminant vaporises before the metal has time to melt. However, aggressive settings on a high power CW laser can alter the surface texture slightly, which is why we recommend pulsed laser cleaning for delicate moulds or historical restoration.
A: For heavy rust, a 3000w laser cleaner can achieve cleaning speeds of 15-20 m²/hour, which is comparable to sandblasting but without the setup time (masking, grit loading, cleanup). For light rust or paint, speeds can be even faster.
A: Yes, but it requires a pulsed laser (MOPA). Continuous wave lasers generate too much heat and will char wood or crack stone. Pulsed lasers gently ablate the surface dirt layer by layer, making them ideal for restoring antique furniture or stone monuments (laser wood cleaning, laser stone cleaning).
A: Yes. Powder coating is tough, but laser energy breaks the polymer bonds effectively. A high power fiber laser is recommended for thick powder coats, as it requires significant energy density to vaporise the coating down to bare metal.
A: The laser cleaning machine price varies widely based on the laser source (CW vs Pulsed) and power. A basic 1000w CW cleaner is affordable for most workshops, while a high-precision 500w Pulsed cleaner is a significant investment for specialized applications. Contact Arcus CNC for a tailored quote.
