Laser Welding Solutions
The End of the “Skilled Welder” Crisis?
The global manufacturing sector is facing a critical bottleneck: a severe shortage of skilled TIG and MIG welders. Mastering the art of traditional arc welding takes years of apprenticeship and practice. For fabrication shops, this translates to high labour costs, inconsistent quality, and production delays.
Laser welding is the technological answer to this crisis.
At Arcus CNC, we view laser welding not just as a joining method, but as a workforce multiplier. By replacing the complex manual dexterity required for TIG with the precise, controlled energy of a fiber laser, we empower novice operators to produce professional-grade welds in hours, not years.

Handheld Laser Welding: Freedom & Flexibility
Portability & Reach
The beauty of the handheld system lies in its flexibility. An operator can take the laser welding gun to the workpiece, rather than moving heavy assemblies to a dedicated welding station. Long Reach: Our machines feature 10-meter or 15-meter fibre optic cables, allowing welders to move freely around large structures like tanks, chassis, or architectural frameworks. Compact Design: The laser welding machine itself is often smaller than a traditional TIG setup, freeing up valuable floor space in crowded workshops.
Ease of Use: The "Wobble" Head
Traditional laser welding required a perfect fit-up (zero gap) because the laser beam is so small. This was a major barrier for general fabrication. Wobble Technology: Arcus CNC handheld guns feature a "Wobble" function. The internal mirrors oscillate the beam in a circular or figure-8 pattern. This effectively widens the weld pool, allowing the laser to bridge gaps (up to 0.5mm - 1.0mm) and creating a wider, more aesthetically pleasing bead that mimics a perfect TIG weave. Pre-Set Parameters: The controller comes with pre-set libraries for common materials. An operator simply selects "Stainless Steel - 2mm - Fillet Weld," and the machin

By combining the speed of light with the practicality of a wire feeder, the handheld laser welder becomes the ultimate tool for job shops handling a mix of thin sheet metal and light structural fabrication.
The "3-in-1" Revolution: Weld, Clean, Cut
By simply changing the copper nozzle on the handheld gun and selecting a different mode on the controller, your welder transforms into a powerful cleaning or cutting tool in seconds.
1. Laser Welding (The Primary Function)
As discussed, the primary mode delivers deep, high-speed welds. But unlike TIG, which requires a highly skilled hand to feed filler rod, the laser wire feeder automates the process, creating consistent, stack-of-dimes beads on mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminium.
2. Laser Cutting (For Fit-Up)
Need to trim a sheet to fit a gap? You don’t need to walk over to the guillotine.
On-the-Fly Cutting: By switching to a cutting nozzle, the high energy density of the fiber laser can slice through thin sheet metal (up to 2mm-3mm depending on power). While it doesn’t replace a dedicated flatbed cutter for precision, it is invaluable for quick trimming and modification during assembly.
3. Laser Cleaning & Rust Removal
Before welding, materials must be clean. Oil, rust, and oxide layers are the enemies of a strong joint.
Pre-Weld Preparation: Switch to “Cleaning Mode,” and the laser beam scans a wide path (up to 80mm-120mm) to vaporise rust and contaminants instantly. This ensures a porous-free weld without the need for chemical solvents or wire brushing.
Post-Weld Finishing: After welding, the laser cleaning machine function can remove the heat tint (discolouration) on stainless steel welds, restoring the surface to a bright, passive state. This capability alone saves hours of manual polishing.

Automated & Robotic Welding (For Mass Production)
Consistency is King
In manual TIG welding, the quality of the weld varies with the operator's fatigue level. In robotic laser welding, the 10,000th part is identical to the first.
Parametric Control: The robot controls the travel speed, focal distance, and wire feed rate with micron-level precision. This ensures consistent penetration depth and bead width, critical for structural certification.
Seam Tracking: Advanced vision systems or tactile sensors scan the joint in real-time. If a part has slight fit-up variations, the robot adjusts its path instantly, ensuring the laser beam hits the seam centre every time.
6-Axis Integration
We partner with leading robotic arm manufacturers (such as Fanuc, ABB, Kuka, and Yaskawa) to deliver turnkey cells.
Complex Geometries: A 6-axis arm can manipulate the laser welding head around complex 3D shapes—welding a battery tray corner, then rotating to weld a cylindrical cooling port in a single fluid motion.
Remote Welding: For certain applications, we use long-focal-length scanner heads (Remote Laser Welding). The robot moves the head over the workpiece while mirrors inside the head steer the beam at incredible speeds, welding multiple spots in milliseconds without the robot arm even stopping.
Safety & Environment: The Invisible Priority
1. PPE Requirements: Why Sunglasses Won't Work
Specific OD Ratings: Operators must wear fiber laser safety glasses with a specific Optical Density (OD) rating, typically OD6+ or OD7+ at 1064nm-1080nm. Arcus CNC supplies certified eyewear that blocks the laser wavelength while allowing visible light through, so the operator can see the weld pool clearly.
Skin Protection: Because handheld laser welding generates UV radiation (similar to TIG), full-coverage clothing and gloves are mandatory to prevent "welder's flash" burns on exposed skin.
2. Fume Extraction
Laser welding vaporises metal and any surface contaminants (oil, coating). This generates distinct metallic fumes.
Source Capture: A dedicated fume extractor is essential. For handheld units, we often integrate a fume nozzle directly onto the gun, sucking the smoke away at the source before it reaches the operator's breathing zone.
Filtration: High-efficiency HEPA filters trap the sub-micron particles, returning clean air to the workshop.
3. Work Cell Design: The "Laser Safe" Zone
For handheld laser welder operations, the workspace must be controlled.
Interlocked Enclosures: We recommend and supply laser-safe welding booths or curtains. These barriers absorb scattered laser light.
Safety Interloops: Our machines feature a safety circuit. The laser will only fire if the "safety clip" is attached to the workpiece (ensuring a ground loop) and the gun's trigger has a dual-stage activation. If the gun is dropped or pointed away from the metal, the beam shuts off instantly.
Industry Applications: Where Speed Meets Strength
Kitchen & Bath Fabrication
For manufacturers of stainless steel sinks, countertops, and commercial extract hoods, the “finish” is everything.
Seamless Joining: Laser welding creates smooth, flat seams on 1.0mm – 1.2mm stainless steel (
304,316).Polishing Reduction: Because the weld bead is so neat and the heat tint is minimal, the post-weld grinding and polishing time is reduced by up to 80%. This is a massive labour saving for sheet metal welding shops.
HVAC & Ductwork
Airtight seals are critical for ventilation efficiency.
Flange Welding: Replacing rivets or spot welds with a continuous laser seam ensures zero air leakage.
Galvanised Steel: Our handheld laser welder parameters are tuned to weld galvanised sheets with minimal zinc burn-off, maintaining corrosion resistance.
Automotive & E-Mobility
The shift to electric vehicles (EVs) has driven the adoption of fiber laser welding.
Battery Packs: Welding copper busbars and aluminium battery casings requires the precise depth control that only a laser can provide. The low heat input prevents damage to sensitive battery cells.
Body-in-White: High-speed remote laser welding of car bodies increases chassis stiffness while reducing weight.
Signage & Display
Aluminium Letters: Welding complex 3D channel letters from thin aluminium returns (
0.6mm - 0.8mm). TIG welding often blows holes in material this thin; laser welding fuses it instantly with no distortion.Clean Aesthetics: The lack of spatter means the sign is ready for painting immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions
A: Yes, and often stronger. Because the laser welding machine creates a narrow, deep fusion zone with a fine grain structure (due to rapid cooling), the mechanical properties of the joint are excellent. In tensile tests, the base metal usually fails before the laser weld.
A: Yes. Just like TIG welding, you need an inert gas to protect the molten pool from atmospheric contamination (porosity).
Nitrogen (N2): Most common for stainless steel (economical and effective).
Argon (Ar): Preferred for Aluminium and Titanium for the highest quality.
Compressed Air: Can be used for welding mild steel where surface oxidation is acceptable, though it is not recommended for aesthetic stainless welds.
Can I weld if the fit-up isn’t perfect? A: Early laser welders required zero gap. However, our modern handheld fiber laser welding machine features “Wobble” technology and an integrated wire feeder. This allows you to bridge gaps of 0.5mm to 1.0mm comfortably, making it practical for general fabrication work.
A: Yes. The 3 in 1 laser welding machine includes a cleaning mode. By changing the nozzle and selecting the “Clean” preset, the laser beam scans a wide path to vaporise rust, oil, and paint. It is an excellent tool for preparing metal before welding or restoring parts (laser rust removal).
