Understanding the Technology
To appreciate the quality of fibre laser cutting services, one must first understand the underlying physics. It is a common misconception that all lasers are the same; however, the distinction between fibre laser vs CO2 technologies is profound, particularly when discussing metal laser cutting.
-
Solid-State Revolution
Unlike legacy CO2 systems which rely on gas mixtures, a fibre laser uses an optical fibre doped with rare-earth elements (Ytterbium). This "Solid-State" architecture means higher efficiency and zero maintenance on mirrors. -
The 1-Micron Advantage
Fibre lasers operate at ~1.064 micrometres (μm), whereas CO2 operates at 10.6 μm. This 10x shorter wavelength is absorbed much more efficiently by reflective metals like aluminium, copper, and brass. -
Focusability
The beam can be narrowed to a focal point as small as 0.05mm. This immense power density allows a 1kW fibre source to often outperform a 3kW CO2 source in thin sheet applications.
The Optical Chain Integrity
Source 1kW - 30kW+
The laser power (ranging from 1000w fiber laser units to massive 30kw fiber laser systems) is generated.
Transport Fibre
Delivers the beam to the gantry.
The Cutting Head
Contains the collimating and focusing lenses. Here, the beam is narrowed to a focal point—often as small as 0.05mm to 0.1mm—depending on the material thickness.
Material Capabilities: The Metallurgy
Carbon & Mild Steel
Carbon steel remains the backbone of the construction and heavy machinery industries. When laser cutting steel, particularly mild steel, the process typically utilises Oxygen (O2) as an assist gas. Applications: Structural beams, chassis components, and laser cut steel signage.
Stainless Steel "Bright Cut"
Stainless steel is prized for its corrosion resistance, and maintaining that property during cutting is paramount. Unlike mild steel, stainless steel laser cutting predominantly uses high-pressure Nitrogen (N2). polishing. Applications: Our equipment excels in custom laser cut stainless steel for the food processing, medical, and pharmaceutical sectors where hygiene and surface finish are non-negotiable.
Aluminium & Copper
Aluminium: Whether you are processing 5052 marine-grade or 6061 aerospace alloys, aluminium laser cutting is now fast and burr-free. Copper & Brass: These highly conductive materials are essential for electrical components. Arcus CNC machines are equipped with back-reflection protection, allowing for safe and stable laser cutting copper and brass
Exotic & Hardened Alloys
Beyond standard fabrication materials, our advanced systems are capable of precision laser cutting for exotic materials such as Titanium and Hastelloy. Titanium, frequently used in aerospace, requires a strictly controlled inert atmosphere (often Argon or Nitrogen) to prevent embrittlement. The high power density of a fibre laser cutter allows it to slice through hardened tool steels and high-nickel alloys that would destroy conventional saw blades.
Arcus Capability Spectrum
The effectiveness of a laser cutting service is defined by two metrics: the raw power of the source and the mechanical precision of the motion system. Arcus CNC integrates world-class components to span the full spectrum of industrial needs.
1kW - 3kW
6kW - 12kW
20kW - 30kW+
Tolerance & Accuracy Engineering
-
Mechanical Rigidity
Arcus CNC machines are built on heavy-duty, thermally annealed frames to dampen vibration. This is critical for maintaining the tolerance of laser cutting, which generally sits within ±0.05mm for standard profiles and even tighter for precision laser cutting applications. -
Positional Accuracy
We utilise high-end servo motors and rack-and-pinion drive systems. This ensures that whether you are cutting a single prototype or ten thousand laser cut accessories, the laser cutting accuracy remains consistent. -
Focusability
The "kerf" is the width of material removed by the laser. In fibre laser cutting, the kerf is incredibly narrow (often 0.1mm - 0.3mm). Our control software automatically applies kerf compensation, ensuring that a hole designed as 10mm typically measures exactly 10mm on the finished part. This high level of laser cutting precision is why industries rely on laser technology for press-fit components and intricate assemblies.
The Production Ecosystem
Nitrogen
Inert Cutting
Used primarily for stainless steel and aluminium, nitrogen prevents oxidation. A nitrogen generator system for laser cutting is often employed by high-volume shops to produce their own gas on-site, reducing reliance on bulk liquid tanks. The result is an oxide-free edge that requires
Oxygen
Exothermic Power
When laser cutting steel (mild steel), oxygen is injected into the cut zone. The oxygen reacts with the hot metal, creating an exothermic reaction that generates additional heat. This allows a lower power laser to cut much thicker plates, though it leaves a slight oxide layer that may need removal for certain applications.
Compressed Air
The Economic Choice
For many applications, particularly with a high power laser (6kW+), purified compressed air is a game-changer. It combines the speed of nitrogen with a fraction of the cost. While it introduces a minor amount of oxidation (since air is ~21% oxygen), it drastically lowers the cost of laser cutting for galvanised steel and aluminium plates where absolute edge aesthetics are secondary to speed.
Machine Formats & Automation
-
Flatbed Laser Cutting
The industry standard. Our flatbed laser systems feature automatic pallet changers (exchange tables), allowing operators to load raw sheets and unload finished parts while the machine continues cutting on the second pallet. This minimises downtime and maximises throughput. -
Coil-Fed Laser Systems
For ultra-high volume production, a coil laser cutting machine offers superior material utilisation. Instead of loading discrete sheets, metal is fed directly from a coil. This allows for continuous cutting of parts of any length and significantly reduces scrap rates compared to standard sheet metal laser profiling machines. -
Tube & Pipe Integration
Many of our systems are hybrid or dedicated tube laser cutting machines, equipped with pneumatic chucks to handle round, square, and rectangular profiles. This allows for complex 3D tube laser cutting that replaces traditional sawing, drilling, and milling in a single operation.
Fibre vs. CO2:
Technical Analysis
-
Operating Costs and Efficiency
Fibre: 30-40% Wall-plug efficiency.
CO2: Only 10-12% efficiency.
Result: Fibre consumes less than half the electricity. -
Maintenance
CO2 lasers require complex optical paths with mirrors and bellows that need regular alignment and purging with lasing gas. A fibre laser cutter has a solid-state transport fibre with no moving parts or mirrors in the source, virtually eliminating the maintenance of laser cutting machine optics.
Application Suitability Matrix
Metal Cutting (Fibre)
For metal laser cutting, fibre is king. Its high absorption rate in metals allows it to cut thin gauge material up to 3-4 times faster than a CO2 laser of equivalent power.
Non-Metals (CO2)
CO2 lasers still hold a strategic advantage in processing non-metals. The 10.6μm wavelength is readily absorbed by organic materials. Therefore, for laser cutting acrylic, wood, leather, or laser cut fabric, a CO2 laser cutting machine is the superior choice. This is why Arcus CNC maintains a portfolio of CO2 solutions for our clients in the signage and textile industries.
The Service Workflow
-
Design for Manufacturing (DFM)
-
File Formats
We primarily work with vector files such as DXF and DWG. These files provide the precise geometric paths for the CNC laser cutter. -
Geometry Optimization
Avoiding "open contours" and double lines is crucial. Our engineering team uses advanced nesting software to arrange parts on the sheet, minimising waste. This "nesting" capability is a key factor in keeping the price of laser cutting competitive. -
Kerf Compensation
Designers do not need to manually offset their drawings. Our control software automatically accounts for the laser kerf (the width of the cut), ensuring that if you draw a 10mm hole, you get a 10mm hole.
Cut Time
Calculated based on the total path length and cutting speed (which is dictated by material thickness and laser power).
Pierce Time
The time taken to punch through the material at the start of each contour. Designs with hundreds of holes will have higher pierce costs.
Material & Gas
The cost of the raw sheet metal and the consumption of assist gas (Nitrogen/Oxygen).
Industrial Applications & Case Studies
Automotive & Transport
In an industry driven by weight reduction and safety, metal laser cutting is indispensable. Chassis & Body: High-strength steels used in pillars and chassis components are notoriously hard to machine mechanically but are cut effortlessly by a fiber laser. Prototyping: Rapid laser cutting services allow automotive engineers to iterate designs for brackets and panels in hours, not weeks, bypassing expensive stamping dies during the R&D phase.
Aerospace & Defence
Where failure is not an option, the laser cutting accuracy of Arcus machines shines. Exotic Alloys: Processing heat-resistant superalloys and Titanium for turbine components and exhaust systems. Traceability: Our laser engraving solutions ensure every part carries a permanent, legible identification code, essential for aerospace compliance.
Construction & Agriculture
Heavy industries demand heavy-duty solutions. Structural Steel: With our high power laser range (12kW - 30kW), fabricators can process thick steel plates for excavators, cranes, and building frameworks with bevelled edges ready for welding. Tube Processing: Tube laser cutting is extensively used to manufacture complex frames for agricultural machinery, replacing manual sawing and drilling with a single, automated process.
Electronics & Enclosures
Precision Enclosures: The manufacturing of server racks and electrical cabinets relies on sheet metal laser cutting for speed and consistency. Heat Sinks: intricate copper and aluminium cutting for thermal management components.

Frequently Asked Questions
Fibre laser cutters are optimised for metals. They excel at cutting Carbon Steel (Mild Steel), Stainless Steel, Aluminium, Brass, Copper, and Titanium. For non-metals like wood, acrylic, or laser cutting leather, a CO2 laser is required.
This depends entirely on the laser power. A 1kW laser is generally limited to 10-12mm Carbon Steel. However, a 30kW high power laser can process steel plates up to 80mm-100mm thick. For clean, production-grade cuts in stainless steel, a 12kW fiber laser can comfortably handle 30mm-40mm.
Vs. Plasma: Laser is significantly more precise (tighter laser cutting tolerance) and leaves a much cleaner edge (smaller HAZ), though plasma is cheaper for very thick, crude plate cutting.
Vs. Waterjet: Laser is much faster (often 5-10x faster) on sheet metal. Waterjet is preferred only for very thick materials or materials that cannot tolerate any heat (like composites or stone).
Yes. We offer dedicated tube laser cutting machines and hybrid systems capable of processing round, square, and rectangular tubes (square tube laser cutting). These machines can cut holes, slots, and complex contours in a single pass.
The price of a laser cutting machine varies based on power (1kW vs 30kW), bed size, and configuration (Open vs Exchange Table). As a manufacturer, Arcus CNC offers highly competitive factory-direct pricing. Contact our sales team for a specific quote on a fiber laser cutting machine.
