Built for repeatable bending accuracy
The value of a CNC bending machine is not only tonnage. Accuracy depends on ram control, back gauge positioning, tooling, crowning and operator-friendly programming.
Delem CNC Controller
2D/3D graphical programming, bend sequence simulation, material library, springback compensation and DXF import for faster setup.
Closed-loop Ram Control
Electro-hydraulic servo valves and dual linear encoders monitor ram position to maintain consistent parallelism and depth.
Servo Back Gauge
Accurate X/R/Z positioning helps operators locate every bend line repeatedly without manual marking.
Automatic Crowning
Compensates for machine deflection during long bends so the angle remains consistent from left to right.
Quick-change Tooling
Promecam-compatible or American-style tooling systems reduce setup time for mixed-batch production.
Safety Guarding
Laser safety guarding and interlocks help protect operators during daily production.
All-Electric Servo Press Brakes for precision and energy saving
An all-electric press brake replaces the hydraulic circuit with servo motor-driven ball screw actuators. It is especially useful for thin-to-medium sheet metal, high-volume precision parts, clean environments and factories that want lower energy consumption and reduced maintenance.

How a press brake forms sheet metal
Different bending methods balance flexibility, accuracy and tonnage requirement. The right method depends on part geometry, angle tolerance, material and production volume.
Flexible angle control
The punch does not bottom out in the V-die. CNC ram depth controls angle, making one tool set usable for a range of angles.
Higher repeatability
The sheet is forced to the die bottom, giving more repeatable angles but requiring more tonnage and matched tooling.
Tight tolerance parts
Very high pressure coins the punch radius into the material for sharp, highly precise bends with minimal springback.
Accurate flat patterns
The controller uses material data to account for bend allowance and neutral axis position during programming.
How to choose the right CNC press brake
A good bending machine specification starts with the parts you produce every week, not the largest part you may bend once a year.
Tonnage
Calculate required force based on material, thickness, bend length and V-die opening. Add a safety margin for stainless or high-strength steel.
Bending length
Match machine length to your regular longest part to avoid unnecessary cost, footprint and tooling expense.
Throat depth
Important for boxes, trays and enclosures where previously bent flanges need column clearance.
Back gauge axes
More axes help with angled bends, tapered parts and multi-stage forming without manual layout marking.
Controller and programming
Delem CNC with graphical simulation and DXF import can reduce setup time and support repeat work.
Crowning
Automatic crowning is essential for long bends because it compensates ram and bed deflection under load.
Hydraulic vs all-electric press brake
For thick plate, long parts and higher tonnage, hydraulic systems remain the practical choice. For thin-to-medium precision work, clean production and lower energy use, all-electric servo bending can deliver a faster return.
| Comparison Factor | CNC Hydraulic Press Brake | All-Electric Servo Press Brake |
|---|---|---|

'Press brake' and 'bending machine' are often used interchangeably in the sheet metal fabrication industry. Strictly speaking, a press brake refers specifically to a machine that uses a punch-and-die tool set to form angular bends in sheet metal. The term 'bending machine' is broader and can encompass roll bending machines (for curved/cylindrical forms), tube benders, and section benders — in addition to press brakes. In the context of this page, all three product types (hydraulic press brake, electric press brake, panel bender) are correctly described as CNC bending machines.
The standard air bending tonnage formula: Force (T) = (L × t²) / (V × 1.7) where L = bend length in metres, t = material thickness in mm, V = V-die opening in mm. For a 2,000mm bend in 4mm mild steel with a 32mm V-die: (2.0 × 16) / (32 × 1.7) = 32 / 54.4 = 0.59 T/mm × 2,000mm = 1,176 tonnes force required. Always add 20% safety margin and account for material grade: stainless steel requires 1.5× mild steel tonnage; high-strength steel may require 2× or more. Arcus CNC's applications engineering team provides free tonnage calculations for specific part programmes — contact us with your material type, thickness, and bend lengths.
All Arcus CNC hydraulic press brakes are equipped with the Delem DA-66T as standard — the current flagship model in the Delem press brake controller range. The DA-66T provides full 3D graphical programming, automatic tool selection, springback compensation from a built-in material library, DXF import from CAD/CAM systems, and networked operation for factory integration. All-electric press brakes use the Delem DA-69T — the electric-drive optimised variant of the DA-66T with specific features for servo-electric ram control. Delem is the globally recognised standard controller in the press brake industry, ensuring that any programmer familiar with press brake CNC can operate Arcus CNC machines without retraining.
Springback is the elastic recovery that occurs in bent sheet metal after the punch retracts — the bent angle 'springs back' open by a few degrees as the elastic portion of the material's deformation recovers. The amount of springback depends on material type, yield strength, work hardening, material temper, bend radius, and V-die opening. On 2mm mild steel in air bending, springback is typically 1–3°. On 2mm 304 stainless steel, it can be 4–8°. On aluminum alloy, it varies widely by alloy and temper.
Delem CNC controllers manage springback automatically by storing material-specific springback compensation values in the material library. When the operator programs a 90° bend on 2mm stainless steel, the controller automatically applies the stored compensation angle — bending to, say, 82° so that the part springs back to exactly 90° after the punch retracts. For new materials not in the library, a manual calibration sequence (three test bends) establishes the springback value, which is then stored for all future production.
Arcus CNC press brake accuracy specifications: Ram depth accuracy ±0.01mm (hydraulic) and ±0.005mm (electric). Back gauge positioning accuracy ±0.01mm on all servo-driven axes. Bend angle repeatability (from part to part within a production run): ±0.3° on standard mild steel in air bending with correct springback compensation applied. This level of accuracy is sufficient for the vast majority of sheet metal fabrication applications. For tighter angular tolerances (±0.1° or better), all-electric press brakes with laser angle measurement feedback are available — contact Arcus CNC applications engineering to discuss requirements.
Arcus CNC press brakes bend all commercially significant sheet metals: mild steel, carbon steel, high-strength and ultra-high-strength steel, stainless steel (304, 316, duplex grades), aluminum and aluminum alloys, galvanized steel, copper, brass, and titanium sheet. The key variable for each material is yield strength — higher yield strength requires higher tonnage for the same thickness and bend geometry. Arcus CNC's material library includes stored parameters for over 200 standard material grades. Contact applications engineering for parameters on non-standard or exotic alloy sheets.
